Ode to Carol Connolly

lo, hark, over the sleeping streets
a voice breaks like a methane wind.
Hectoring, harsh, pretentious, metered,
full of portent. "you have sinned
'gainst father paul and mother sheila."
from perch high above the town.
Inveigling 'gainst sins both great and bigger
and the biggest - keeping taxes down.

the mayor says, as strummer's poster,
the city knows much more than you.
carol connolly, government poet -
(for art's own sake shall no longer do).
with wisdom infinite, the artist sees
things peasants can't (they're just the worst!).
subsidized art that doesn't suck?
connolly would be the first...
